Australian Open Junior Championships - Quarterfinals
And then there were four: the special K group, last or first name starting with K, is through to the semi-finals in girls\' singles. All four are from countries formerly east of the Iron Curtain. Unseeded Elizaveta Kulichkova (RUS) continued her dominance over seeded players by beating Elise Mertens (8, BEL). Ana Konjuh (3, CRO) moved past Barbora Krejcikova (CZE), another K. Anett Kontaveit (10, EST) had a surprisingly easy time with Antonia Lottner (4, GER). Last but not least Katerina Siniakova (2, CZE) advanced over Jelena Ostapenko (LAT).
The two Italians boys reversed roles. Gianluigi Quinzi (2), the higer seed bowed out to unseeded Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS) while Filippo Baldi (8) was stronger than top seed Nikola Milojevic (SRB) in his three set victory. Next up for Baldi is Nick Kyrgios (3, AUS), who defeated Wayne Montgomery (7, RSA). Kokkinakis meets Borna Coric (11, CRO) who got past the challenge of Matej Maruscak (SVK).
Australians could well see a dual victory in boys competition if either Kyrgios or Kokkinakis come through in singles. They also have Jay Andrijic and Bradley Mousley in the doubles final. Konjuh still has a shot at a double as she and Carol Zhao (CAN), the top seeds in girls doubles, made it to the final. There, they will meet Oleksandra Korashvili (UKR) and Krejcikova, the sixth seed.
