AT THE EASTER BOWL

Unseeded Southern California’s Raymond Sarmiento and
Shayne Austin pull off shockers at Junior Spring Nationals

April 14, 2009, Palm Desert, Calif. — Unseeded Raymond Sarmiento survived three match points to upset the No. 1 seed in the first round of the ITF boys’ 18-and-under division Tuesday at the Easter Bowl Junior Spring National Championships. Sarmiento’s huge, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), comeback win over ITF world-ranked No. 16 Denis Kudla was just one of a couple of big upsets at the 42nd annual event.
Sarmiento, of Fontana, Calif., and Kudla, of Arlington, Va., battled intense wind conditions throughout the match. “I wasn’t worried about how he would handle the wind, I was more worried about myself,” said Sarmiento, best of friends with Kudla off the court. “Of course I was nervous in that tiebreaker.”
Unseeded Southern Californian Shayne Austin upset No. 3 seeded Blair Shankle of Comfort, Texas, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the girls’ 16s. Austin, a freshman from Oak Park, Calif., an hour north of Los Angeles, wasn’t the only player to pull of a big win on the girls’ side. Last year’s girls’ 16s champion Ellen Tsay of Pleasanton, Calif., downed Mallory Burdette, the No. 7 seed from Jackson, Ga., 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-0, on the second day of the girls’ 18s.
Also in the 18s No. 9 seeded Alexandra Cercone of Seminole, Fla., downed 14-year-old Grace Min of Duluth, Ga., 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Ryan Smith of Weston, Fla., upset No. 2 seeded Joseph DiGiulio of Newport Beach, Calif., in Round 3 of the boys’ 14s, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Smith said he has lost to DiGiulio all three times they have played each other. “I was just a little more patient out there today,” Smith said. “The last times we’ve played I’ve gone a little bit nuts. I just picked up my game a little bit after the first set.”
Former 14s Easter Bowl champion Beatrice Capra had no problems in her match. The No. 3 seed in the 18s, Capra beat Lacey Smith, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the third round. Capra, from Ellicott City, Md., but currently training in Florida, won the USTA Spring Super Nationals at Mobile, Ala., last month. “I would consider that and my Easter Bowl 14s my biggest tournament wins,” Capra said. “Anytime you win the Easter Bowl you have to rank it as one of the best.”
