The Optus
Australian Junior Davis and Junior Fed
Cup teams continued their winning form
today against the toughest opposition so
far.
On the final day of the round-robin, the
No.7 seeded Optus Australian Junior Fed
Cup team staged a fantastic 2-1 win over
No.2 seeds China. The girls got off to a
shaky start when China's Hao-Chen Tang
defeated Molly Polak 6-0 6-3.
Australia's No.1, Viktorija Rajicic,
then came back strongly and leveled the
tie with a brilliant 7-5 6-4 win against
China's Sai-Sai Zeng, the world No.5
ranked girl in her age group.
Rajicic, who is still overcoming a hand
injury, then teamed with Alexandra
Nancarrow to seal the tie with a 6-3 6-3
win in the doubles.
When asked about how she felt about
upsetting the No.2 seeded team, Optus
Australian Junior Fed Cup captain,
Alicia Molik said, "I dont know if it
was an upset today, because I always
thought Vicky had the game to beat the
Chinese number one. I knew she was a
tough player, but Chris [Mahony, team
coach] and I came up with a game plan
that we knew Vicky could execute, and
all credit to her, she played really
well.
"The Chinese were a very, very tough
[doubles] pair and there were a few
specific things we needed the girls to
do and to execute - take their time,
look confident, look upbeat - and they
did for the entire match, and that was a
very important factor in today's win,"
Molik continued.
On her inspiring win today 15-year-old
Viktorija Rajicic said, "I'm getting
used to the grass, I'm playing a lot
better, using my attacking game, and
learning how to come in [to the net]. I
love playing people that are older than
me, it's a good experience, especially
when you beat them, like I did today, it
felt great! Alicia's been telling me to
stay on my toes a lot, and she's been
great."
Tomorrow the girls will meet No.8 seeds
Korea in the quarterfinals, the first
day of knockout competition. A win will
see the girls secure a spot in the final
four and progress to the Junior Fed Cup
final in Mexico in September.
Optus Australian Junior Davis Cup
captain Pat Rafter had a nervous start
to the day, with a see-sawing opening
rubber in which Australia's Joey
Swaysland and Japan's Shoki Hachiya were
locked in a battle of top quality
tennis. Swaysland was eventually
overcome by Hachiya 3-6 6-7 5-7 in the
two and a half hour marathon, putting
Australia's No.1, Luke Saville under
pressure in the second rubber.
Saville rose to the occasion, evening
the score with a 7-5 7-6 win over
Motoaki Kita. He teamed with Swaysland
and they sealed the tie in commanding
fashion, winning 6-3 6-1 over Kita and
Hachiya.
In tomorrows quarterfinals the boys are
up against unseeded team Hong Kong, who
defeated No.7 seeds the Philippines in
an upset today.
"I'm really proud of how well both boys
played today," Pat Rafter said. "Joey
played a fantastic match, and although
he didn't manage to pull off a win, he
played some great tennis and showed a
lot of grit out there against a quality
opponent. He will have learnt some
valuable lessons today and will be a
better player for it. As for Luke, well
he played a great game and showed a lot
of composure. It's pretty tough going
out there, having all the pressure on
your shoulders, representing your
country, but he really pulled it off. It
was also great to see both boys do so
well in the doubles - they really
dominated and didn't give the opposition
much of a chance.
"It will be interesting to see how we go
against Hong Kong tomorrow. I know on
paper it looks favourable for us, but as
we have seen before, results can be
unpredictable when you are playing as a
team."
