Australian girls second in junior Fed Cup qualifying
The seventh seeded Optus Australian Junior Fed Cup team has finished the Asia/Oceania qualifying event in second position after losing 2-1 to top seeds Japan in Shepparton , Victoria.

The fifth seeded Optus Australian Junior Davis Cup team also fell short today, losing to No.2 seeds India .

In Junior Fed Cup, a groin injury forced Molly Polak to retire in the first set of the singles, putting the pressure on Viktorija Rajicic in the second singles rubber.

Japan’s Emi Mutaguchi was too strong for Rajicic, winning 6-1 6-0 to give the tie, and the top spot, to Japan .

Rajicic overcame her disappointment to team with Alexandra Nancarrow to win the doubles 7-6(6) 6-2 over Japan ’s Mutaguchi and Risa Ozaki.

“It's been a great week, particularly today, the girls were 0-2 down and they salvaged a win in the doubles so I was very impressed with the way they finished off and certainly showed their spirit, said Optus Australian Junior Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik.

“The girls were seeded outside of the four and only four qualify to go to Mexico and Australia is one of those teams so it was a very, very solid week from the girls.”

“It's bringing that level of professionalism and that's certainly a message that I made sure they understood going into this dead rubber. It's the professional thing going into a dead rubber match still trying to win, still playing for pride but they've had a great week, they've trained hard, they're all very good listeners and they've all done the right thing this week so I think we were very deserving of the result that we got.”

In the Junior Davis Cup, Todd Volmari put in a valient effort after losing the first set 6-0 to India ’s Saurabh Singh, fighting back strongly to win the second 6-4, before losing 6-2 in the third.

Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash then secured the third place position for India with a 6-4 7-6(3) win over Joey Swaysland.

Optus Australian Junior Davis Cup captain, Pat Rafter said “I think it's been a successful week. To qualify was our main objective and then we came up against a team that was far too good for us in Korea [in the semifinals] and today the Aussie boys didn't play well enough to beat the Indians, which was a little bit disappointing but that's the way it goes.”

The top four teams in each event qualified for the world final of Junior Fed Cup and Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, which will take place in Mexico in September.
