The Optus Australian World Junior Tennis Competition boys’ team of Jay Andrijic (NSW), Nick Kyrgios (ACT) and Daniel Talens (SA) finished in the top spot at the Asia Oceania qualifying event in Malaysia.
This excellent result will see Australia progess to the World Final, to be held in Prostejov , Czech Republic , in August. Also through to the World Final are Chinese Taipei , Japan and Uzbekistan.
The third seeded Australian team was undefeated for the week, winning over Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and No.5 seeds Chinese Taipei during the first three days of round-robin competition. In the quarterfinals on Friday the boys defeated No.7 seeds India 3-0 , backing up to win the semifinal over No.6 seeds Uzbekistan.
In the final the boys put in another solid performance against No.5 seeds Chinese Taipei, winning 3-0.
Nick Kyrgios got the boys off to a flying start, playing some of his best tennis for the week to defeat Wei-Jen Chen 6-3 6-1.
Jay Andrijic also contined his unbeaten run. His opponent, Temur Ismailov, broke early, racing to a 3-1 lead in the first set. Andrijic steadied, hitting seven straight winners from 5-5 and taking the first set 7-5. In the second set Jay took the upper hand early, leading 5-2 before losing a match point. Isnmailov took advantage and came back to level 5-5. Andrijic held his nerve, overpowering him to take the game and win the tie-breaker 7-2. The final score was 7-5 7-6(2).
Daniel Talens teamed with Andrijic in the dead doubles rubber, defeating Ismailov and Pavel Tsoy 6-3 6-0.
On finishing in the number one spot, Jay Andrijic said, “I feel great, very proud about how well we played, and winning for Australia . I love playing for my country, and not just myself, and we all (the team members) have a great respect for each other.”
On the opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best 14/u players, Nicholas Kyrgios said, “Meeting players from other countries and seeing how good I am compared to them, and seeing what I have to do to get better was a great experience. Next I want to do well at the Optus Nationals, try to win, and hopefully get picked for the Young Stars tour and make the Australian team for the world finals.”
“We have a solid all round team,” Daniel Talens said. We were the more aggressive team and our doubles combinations worked well. It feels really good being the number one team in the whole region.”
Optus Australian World Junior Tennis Competition team manager, Michael Tebbut, was proud of the boys’ attitude and performances during the week. “The boys worked really hard this week and deserve this fantastic result. It was great to see how professional they were and how they supported each other and worked as a team.”
The World Junior Tennis Competition is an ITF team event for boys and girls aged 14/u.
